Other people's Mashups of my tunes!

Check out this mashup "missdeinas" made of my Ikebe Shakedown tune "Pepper" and Greek folk singer Arleta (with some Max Romeo).   I'm really flattered, and I dig the track!

Someone also did a mashup of AC/DC's "Back in Black" with my Breakdown Brass tune "Driggs" a little while back!

Marcinkiewicz Mouthpiece Factory visit

I had a great time at the Marcinkiewicz mouthpiece factory outside Portland a few days ago.  A huge thanks to Zack, Joe and everyone over there for hooking me up with some newness!  I can't say enough about their expertise/generosity/patience.  Thanks also to John Christianson ("Johnny Christmas" from Reel Big Fish) for bringing me along, good times.

West Coast tour with Zongo Junction. Tacos.

After the current Streetlight tour I'll be heading back to California with BK friends Zongo Junction for a couple of weeks.  I'll be subbing for my good friend Kevin Moehringer while he heads to Australia with the Easy Star All-Stars.

Zongo is a 10-piece original afrobeat group...can't wait!  It's a co-headlining tour with fellow Brooklyn-ites Turkuaz (11-piece party funk), so you know it's gonna be a hang.  Hope to see some familiar faces!

  • 12/30 - Chico, CA (Lost on Main)
  • 12/31 - Lake Tahoe, CA (Sugar Bowl Ski Resort)

Lionize's new single

I'm happy to be featured on the lead single from Lionize's new album, "Superczar and The Vulture" alongside Jim Conti (Streetlight Manifesto).  Lionize are great dudes and fantastic musicians, huzzah!  Jim and I do a short horn trade at the 2:30 mark

Streetlight Manifesto live!

It was pretty amazing selling out a 2300-person venue in my hometown.  This video of last tours set opener is pretty good, other than the audio.

New recording with Dutch

I'm happy to be on the latest Dutch record, alongside some seriously inspiring musicians/friends.  Most of the arrangements were thrown together on the spot, which I think led to a ton of vibe in the recordings.  A huge thanks to Andy Cotton (bass, bandleader, producer, engineer), Morgan Price (saxes, producer), Borahm Lee (keys), Adam Klippe (keys), Yuval Lion (drums) and Mark Spencer (guitar).

Brazil goes HARD!

I recently went to Brazil for a few shows with Streetlight Manifesto, the crowds there are crazy!  Beautiful country, beautiful people.  WARNING: This YouTube clip is LOUD and lo-fi, but it shows the amazing energy that night.

New MINI Coupe commercial features Ikebe Shakedown's "Sakonsa"

I'm happy to announce that MINI recently licensed a tune from Ikebe Shakedown's recent LP for their new commercial campaign.  "Sakonsa" was written by Jason Colby, our trumpet player.  The full version is up on YouTube, check it out!

Recent gig videos! (Soul, Dixie)

I'm trying to keep the posts coming, so here are some videos from a recent gig.  The Del-Reys opened for The Slackers last Friday at Bowery Ballroom, and I also sat in with Roosevelt Dime (the first act).  Here's a taste:

Breakdown Brass

I've been back in Brooklyn for a little while, staying busy with gigs/sessions/hangs.  Ikebe Shakedown is hard at work with gigs/recording/writing, it's nice to be back in the swing of things.  I did a fun recording session for Shaina Taub (singer) with Tatum Greenblatt (Trumpet for Richard Bona) and Geoff Countryman (SNL Sax Player/Librarian).  I've also been writing for Breakdown Brass, my funk/hiphop brass band (I play sousaphone and do all writing/arranging/booking)

Here's a taste of what Breakdown Brass is like, a video of an early 90's hip hop medley from Brooklyn Bowl is above and "Pinky and the Brain" is below

Finally, here's our version of my favorite Joe Henderson tunes, "Jinrikisha" (ROUGH, Live Version):

Streetlight Manifesto in Moscow!

Moscow was one of the craziest places I've ever been: beautiful women, insane highways, and a sobering contrast between the rich/poor.  The wildest part was probably the fans moshing around and screaming the (English) lyrics at us.  I was insanely sick at the time (fever/chills, bronchitis) but I still know how lucky I am to be able to travel like this.   Big thanks to Diman Showman (our promoter), hope to make it out there again soon!

Heading to New Orleans for Jazz Fest

Onstage at the New Orleans Jazz Fest w/James Andrews

Teaser Track from Ikebe Shakedown's upcoming record!

Ikebe Shakedown - "Tujunga" by Ubiquity Records

Ikebe Shakedown - "Tujunga" b/w "No Name Bar"
You can now stream the final version of my afro-disco tune "Tujunga" from Ikebe Shakedown's self-titled sophomore release, courtesy of Ubiquity Records (Orgone, Breakestra, NOMO, etc.)  We recorded this at Dunham Studios with Tom Brenneck (Dap-Kings, Budos Band, etc.), who also lent his late-night synth talents to the end.  I'm looking forward to my second songwriter credit on a 45!  The first single (Tujunga b/w No Name Bar) will be released on May 10th, and the full-length CD/LP "Ikebe Shakedown" will drop on June 7th.

Back from Australia, off to Europa!

I recently got back from 2 weeks in Australia/New Zealand with Streetlight Manifesto. Wow! It was my first time there, and basically it's just as amazing as everyone says. Special thanks to Ben Neilson (tour manager) and Adrian Spinks (merch-man) for showing us a great time.

I finally moved to Brooklyn (Park Slope) from Jersey City right before we left for Australia, so I've spent the past week unpacking in between my gigs. Now it's time to pack again, this time for Europe!

Streetlight will be playing the main stage at Groezrock, a HUGE Punk/Rock festival (over 32,000 people) in Meerhout, Belgium. To make the trip a little more exciting, we're also stopping in Moscow and Athens! I'm so lucky to get to see these places, even if it's just for a day or two.

Finally, I'm going to New Orleans to play Jazzfest! I'll be gigging in town with James Andrews (Trombone Shorty's older brother), The Pimps Of Joytime, and Brother Joscephus (so far). Can't wait!

Trombone on The Pimps Of Joytime's upcoming album: "Janxta Funk!"

I'm happy to be featured on a few tracks off of The Pimps Of Joytime's upcoming album "Janxta Funk".  Brian J and the PJT's have been touring hard for the last few years, and are starting to make some serious noise in the Funk world.  Watch me be awkward in their new video, "Take The L Train", and listen for me on the title track "Janxta Funk!"

Touring USA/Canada with Streetlight Manifesto

Streetlight Manifesto in Denver, CO
I'm getting ready to head out on the road with "Streetlight Manifesto" for the next couple of months. A Punk/Ska/Rock band with 4 horns, Streetlight is definitely a departure from my usual gigs. That said, it's probably the hardest gig i've ever played: HIGH energy, LONG sets in HOT venues, and it's nothing but SCREAMING trombone/vocal parts.  It's a lot of fun, the guys are great musicians, and the travel is comfortable (bus tours).

Another great thing about the Streetlight gig is the fans.  They know every lyrics/horn line and sing (scream) along while we do our thang, it definitely gets you pumped up.  There's a lot of stage diving and mosh-pit action as well (which honestly just scares me, I have to dodge kids so I don't get smacked in the teeth).

Check out the tour dates on my schedule, and this video of Streetlight at the Reading Festival in England over the summer.  Listen for the crowd singing the horn lines at us!

Trombone with Syl Johnson & The Sweet Divines @ Southpaw, BK

A couple months back I was honored to be asked to play with The Sweet Divines backing up the great Syl Johnson in Brooklyn.  Syl had his first hit in 1967 when he released "Come On Sock It To Me" on Twinight Records, and was still hitting the Billboard charts in 1982 when he released "Ms. Fine Brown Frame".  After taking a break from the music industry he was sampled by The Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, Kool G Rap, MC Hammer and others, sparking a re-entry into the business by releasing "Back In The Game" in 1994.

The Sweet Divines, along with the Dig Deeper series are leading the way in the NYC Soul Scene, having hosted such legendary R&B/Soul artists as Martha Whitney, Otis Clay, The Green Berets, Tami Lynn, Billy Prince, Renaldo Domino and more

Trombone on James Andrews (NOLA) upcoming album (prod. Brian Jay)

James Andrews
I'm happy to be on a few tracks from James Andrews' upcoming album, "The Big Time Stuff". James is Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews' older brother, and is a real veteran of the NOLA scene. This was recorded in Brian Jay's (Pimps of Joytime) home studio.

Tracks: "Keep That Music Playin" feat. Cyril Neville, "Ghetto Funk Music" feat. Monk B, "Take A Little Trip"

Shakedown Horns - James Andrews Clips by NadavNirenberg

Trombone, Solo on Ikebe Shakedown's "No Answer" (prod. Dunham Studios)

My solo starts at around 2:16, this tune was written by Robin Schmidt, taken from our debut EP "Hard Steppin". Recorded live at Dunham Studios (Budos Band, Menahan Street Band, Mark Ronson, Cee Lo, etc), this was the first take of the day.

Trombone on Navegante's "Rebel Ship Rock"

Skip to 1:00 to hear da horns.  Extra credit if you can name the Fela tune this horn line is "inspired by"

Trombone on Ritz Superbowl Commerical (prod. Wyclef Jean)

Recording w/Wyclef Jean at Platinum Sound
If you skip to :20 you'll hear the cover of EWF's "Lets Groove" I recorded with Wyclef Jean for Ritz Crackers. I went to this recording session straight from my first tour with The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and I remember feeling pretty damn happy that night!

Trombone/Sousaphone on "Pilot Talk 2" (Curren$y, Ski Beatz prod.)

I'm proud to be on this Curren$y track "Highed Up", produced by Ski Beatz.  Curren$y has some serious momentum going, and Ski Beatz produced most of Jay-Z's "Reasonable Doubt", which was a huge album for me.

Welcome! Trombone Solo @ Montreal Jazz Festival

Hey guys, thanks for checking out my little bootleg blog/website.  Obviously i'm still getting things together, but you can check out my schedule, some video clips, etc.  Hopefully i'll get the hang of this soon, in the meantime here's a solo video from the Montreal Jazz Festival:
